SimCalc MathWorlds: Composable Components for Calculus Learning
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction: Reforming the mathematics curriculum SimCalc's mission is to enable all children to learn the mathematics of change beginning in the early grades. This mathematics is conventionally sequestered in elite calculus courses after many prerequisites, which denies access to critically important ideas of rate, accumulation, approximation, limit, mean value, etc. We aim to teach these essential ideas to mainstream children, as part of a restructured K-12 mathematics curriculum. By supporting conceptual growth of powerful ideas, we will prepare all citizens to describe, discuss, design, and analyze processes of change (Kaput, 1995).

A Calculus for Modeling Software Components
Many competing definitions of software components have been proposed over the years, but still today there is only partial agreement over such basic issues as granularity (are components bigger or smaller than objects, packages, or application?), instantiation (do components exist at run-time or only at compile-time?), and state (should we distinguish between components and “instances” of compo...
متن کاملCognitive complexity in mathematics teaching and learning: emerging findings in a large-scale experiment
Many Learning Sciences projects use technology to enhance the cognitive richness of teaching and learning, although few projects investigate the robustness of their approaches across a wide variety of teachers and classrooms. Our Scaling Up SimCalc project has completed experiments in which over a hundred mathematics teachers in 7th or 8th grade used either SimCalc or their existing materials. ...
متن کاملOn the Synthesis of the System Graph for 3D Mechanics
This paper presents a methodology for deriving the system graph of a 3D mechanism from CAD models. That is, a linear graph that captures the energy flow in a system. This work is part of a larger research effort in composable simulation. In composable simulation, CAD models of system components are augmented with simulation models describing the component’s dynamic behavior in different energy ...
متن کاملA Calculus for Reconfigurable Component-Based Systems
The concept of reconfigurable systems is almost always restricted to the abstract design level, in which configuration languages are used to manipulate software connections. In this paper, we propose to deal with reconfiguration abstraction also in the formal specification level. We show that the process algebra π-calculus, widely applied to specify composable systems, is not suitable to captur...
متن کاملA Description Language For Composable Components
In this paper we present CCDL, our description language for composable components. We have introduced hierarchically composable components as means to achieve finetuned customization of component based systems. A composable component is defined by a fixed contractual specification of its external view and a set of structural constraints for its internal configuration. The internal configuration...
